On November 14, 1918, hetman P.P. Skoropadskyi approved the "Law of the Ukrainian State on the Establishment of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kyiv" adopted by the Council of Ministers, as well as the statute and staff of the Academy and its institutions. Already on November 27 of the same year, the first Joint Meeting of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Academy) took place in the premises of the Ukrainian Scientific Society, which was located on the street now called Yaroslaviv Val, 36, at which V.I. Vernadskyi, and the indispensable secretary of A.Yu. Crimean This date is officially considered the founding time of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The name of the Academy was changed seven times. From November 1918 to June 1921, it was called the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (UAS); from June 1921 to April 1935 – All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (VUAN); from April 1935 to February 1936 – Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (UAS); from February 1936 to January 1937 – Academy of Sciences of the USSR (USSR Academy of Sciences); from January 1937 to August 1991 – the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (AS of the Ukrainian SSR); from August 1991 to March 1994 - the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (AS of Ukraine), and from March 22, 1994 - the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NAS of Ukraine). It became the legal successor of the previous institutions.

In addition to Volodymyr Ivanovich Vernadsky, the first president who headed the Academy from November 1918 to March 1921, its presidents were also: M.P. Vasylenko (July 1921 - February 1922), O.I. Levytskyi (March-May 1922), V.I. Lipskyi (June 1922 - May 1928), D.K. Zabolotny (May 1928 - December 1929), O.O. Bogomolets (July 1930 - July 1946), O.V. Palladin (November 1946 - February 1962), and since February 27, 1962, the highest scientific institution of Ukraine has been headed by B.E. Paton.

During the 100-year period of its existence, the Academy has introduced a number of awards, prizes and distinctions.
