08.12.2025

Natural history collections preserved in museums are, first and foremost, scientific archives that allow tracking changes in biodiversity, evolution, and climate. It is the old specimens that hold unique information that cannot be obtained by any other means, which is why they remain indispensable in modern research. Today, these collections face serious challenges: war, destruction of infrastructure, lack of resources, and gaps in the legal sphere threaten materials that cannot be restored. About why natural history collections are an indispensable tool for modern science, what they can tell scientists, how war changes the conditions of their existence, what risks are critical, and how to ensure the future of collection specimens even in such difficult conditions – in the new episode of the program "About Science. Competently," which airs on the YouTube channel of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
