Why are almost thirty species of bats in Ukraine listed in the Red Book? Why do these animals hibernate instead of migrating like many birds? Where in Poltava did the red bats roost before there were multi-storey buildings with balconies? How do bats reproduce? All this and much more was told in an interview for the podcast "Main Observatory" by senior research fellow of the Population Ecology Laboratory at the I. I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the NAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Biological Sciences Olena Hodlevska.
The scientist spoke about a recent incident in Poltava where about one and a half thousand bats were affected, most of which were fortunately saved by volunteers and specialists from a rehabilitation center in Kharkiv. She explained why this story received much less publicity than the death of dolphins in the Black Sea in 2022. Olena Hodlevska also clarified what to do if you unexpectedly encounter a bat but do not want to become an enemy of nature or a negative character in the news and social media.
