The highest award of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine – the V.I. Vernadsky Gold Medal was established in 2003 in honor of the first President of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, the world-famous academician Volodymyr Ivanovych Vernadsky, and on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the Academy as well. Scholars are awarded the medal for outstanding achievements in the field of natural, engineering and social sciences, as well as for academic papers, discoveries and inventions that have important scientific and practical significance and confirm the authority of Ukrainian science. The Academy annually awards a Gold Medal – one to a national and one to a foreign scholar. The awarding takes place in a solemn atmosphere at the annual session of the General Meeting of the Academy, where the laureates make scientific reports. The announcement of the awarding the highest award with a short abstract of works, a scientific and biographical reference is published in the “Bulletin of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine”.
